Most well known for portraying Elizabeth Lavenza (the Bride of Frankenstein) in the 1931 Boris Karloff starrer Frankenstein, Clarke is also remembered for sharing a scene with James Cagney in another 1931 feature, The Public Enemy.

Born Violet Mary Klotz, she grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as the daughter of a movie theater organist father. Her first marriage, to fellow entertainer Lew Brice, ended in divorce, as did her final two marriages (to Stevens Bancroft and Herbert Langdon).
