Her mother was Ruth Rapalje and her father was Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Melville Dill, former Commanding Officer of the Bermuda Militia Artillery. In 1944, she gave birth to Michael Douglas, and in 1947, she gave birth to Joel Douglas.
