Martin Scorsese, with several other directors, will announce during the Festival de Cannes the launch of the World Cinema Foundation, devoted to the preservation and restoration of the masterpieces of world cinema.

Martin Scorsese will give an outstanding Cinema Masterclass for the 60th Festival: following Oliver Stone, Nanni Moretti and Sydney Pollack, he will evoke his work as a director and his passion for the cinema.

On Sunday May 27th, during the closing ceremony, he will present the Caméra d'or prize to the director of the best first film shown at the Festival de Cannes.

Winner of the Palme d'or in 1976 with Taxi Driver and President of the Jury in 1998, this year Martin Scorsese won Best Director and Best Film Oscars for The Departed (Les Infiltrés).

Stephen Frears has just accepted the presidency of the jury of the 60th Festival de Cannes, which will take place between May 16-27.

Revealed in 1985 with My Beautiful Laundrette, Stephen Frears presented his award-winning Prick up Your Ears in 1987 in the Official Selection at the Festival de Cannes.

In 1988, Dangerous Liaisons won him international fame. He has alternated since, with equal joy, between great genre films (Accidental Hero, The Grifters) and more intimist or engaged subjects (The Snapper, High Fidelity, Dirty Pretty Things).

Stephen Frears' latest film, The Queen, has proven his greatest success ever in Great Britain.

Stephen Frears declares upon this occasion:

"Of course, it's an honour but it's also a treat, to be able to watch terrific films from all over the world in such heady surroundings. God Save Cannes! (as well as the Queen). "

Gilles Jacob, President of the Festival de Cannes responds in turn:

"I am particularly delighted that Stephen Frears accepted my proposal this year. We thus pay tribute to this great, inspired filmmaker, endowed with freedom of mind and love of making films. The 60th Festival will henceforth take place under a lucky star, that of intelligence, wit and a dash of impertinence."
